Pair Eyewear is seeking a hands-on Head of Engineering to lead and expand our engineering teams responsible for both front-end and back-end technologies. Reporting directly to the Chief Product Officer, this role will manage two engineering teams—one overseeing the React-based frontend systems and another managing our internal order management platform—plus DevOps and IT. The Head of Engineering will be pivotal in shaping our technical direction, driving innovation, and ensuring that our systems are robust, scalable, and aligned with business goals.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop and lead the engineering vision and strategy, overseeing the growth and performance of multiple engineering teams.
  • Directly manage two engineering managers, each responsible for distinct domains (frontend Next.js app and backend Ruby on Rails app). Guide them in their leadership development, strategic planning, and operational excellence.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Product, Design, Analytics, and Business stakeholders, ensuring technology efforts are aligned with business priorities and customer needs.
  • Lead the architecture, development, and deployment of high-impact systems across our technology stack, with a focus on scaling our headless Shopify site and our internal OMS.
  • Drive the evolution of engineering and scrum practices, including decomposition and estimation, testing, deployment, and retro processes to ensure the efficiency, reliability, and scalability of the team.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and trends, advocating for and implementing modern best practices that enhance both frontend and backend systems.
  • Optimize resources, manage budgets, and prioritize projects to meet business and engineering goals.
  • Communicate technology strategies, project updates, and KPIs to executive leadership, ensuring clarity and alignment across the organization.

  • Strategic problem-solver with a history of making critical decisions in high-impact situations.

Need to Have:

  • 10+ years in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role (Director or Head of Engineering).
  • Proven experience managing engineering managers and multi-functional teams.
  • Strong background in Next.js and React, with hands-on experience managing headless Shopify sites.
  • Strong background in development in a Shopify ecosystem.
  • In-depth knowledge of backend technologies, particularly Ruby architecture.Experience integrating with third-party services and APIs to optimize customer experiences.

Nice to Have:

  • Previous experience implementing engineering processes to ensure scalable growth of the team.
  • Familiarity with DevOps, cloud architecture (AWS, GCP, Azure), and CI/CD best practices.
  • Familiarity with OCR processes for transcribing written documents.
  • Experience working with content management systems like Contentful, and subscription management tools such as Prive and Yotpo.

At Pair, we carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining compensation. These considerations can cause your compensation to vary. The pay range for this position is expected to be between $205,000 - $242,000 and will depend on your skills, qualifications, and experience. Additionally, this role might be eligible for discretionary short-term and long-term incentives. We encourage all interested candidates to apply.
